Analysis Magazine Covers

You can tell from the front cover you can tell that inside there will be articles about such artists as Snow Patrol and 50 Cent. The target audience of this magazine is for age 20 to 40 and for fans of established rock music. The central image of the front cover is a picture of Cheryl Cole. There is direct mode of address which engages the audience. The facial expression shows that she is being seductive. The reason that the magazine have chosen to use Cheryl Cole as the person on the front cover is because she is one of the most famous people in Britain at the moment with a number 1 album, number 1 single and also for being a judge on the hit show “The X-Factor”. The anchorage text on the cover says “3 Words... Cheryl Cole Rocks”. This implies that Cheryl Cole makes rock music which is a controversial statement as many people would say that she does pop music. There are a couple buzzwords on the magazine cover including “previewed” and “introducing”. The letter “Q” which is the name of the magazine is slightly tilted to the left. There is a puff on the right of the magazine talking about an article inside the magazine about “John Lennon”. The slogan of the magazine is “The UK’s biggest music magazine”. This tells readers that it is a very successful magazine. It will attract readers as they will think it is a quality magazine and will want to buy it. The colours that are mainly used are red, white and black. This creates a dark and almost devilish atmosphere but also creates a seductive atmosphere. The magazine uses quite a few different strategies to attract the readers. They use such strategies as having a big celebrity on the front cover, a very good slogan and also good puffs.

The name of this magazine is KERRANG! and the logo which is featured at the top of front cover is bold and in capital letters. The logo looks to be cracked and this goes with the genre of the magazine which is Rock. There is also an explanation mark at the end of the title KERRANG!. The word KERRANG! is the sound that a guitar makes, a guitar is an instrument used a lot in Rock music.
There is a block at the top which contains the statement “Teach you how to be a guitar God”. This could really interest the target audience as the target audience is fans of Rock music and a guitar as an instrument but also an icon of Rock music. The audience could be interested in learning to play the guitar.
The anchorage text tells you that the band “All Time Low” are new stars about to hit the UK. The words “All Time Low” are bold, in capital letters and really bright in yellow. This is used so readers can easily identify.
The magazine cover has such puff words as “Brand New” and “Plus” this attracts readers as they will think the news is very up to date and that the magazine also has some bonuses.
There are posters inside the magazine. This makes the customers think that they are getting more for their money. This is a usual factor of KERRANG! magazine.
The main image is the band “All time low”. They are all looking straight at the camera, this is called direct mode of address. You can tell by the pose and facial expression of the lead member that they are Rock artists. The lead member is leaning forwards and is in front of the rest of the members to distinguish him from the rest.

  1. You have touched upon many different points on the mag covers. You need to analyse the images on the covers in much more detail refering to camera shot/angle, costume, make-up, facial expression/body language and link this to how the artist is represented and how this appeals to the target audience.
